Velma Simmons

August 11, 1930 — June 10, 2022

Velma Evelyn Lafond Simmons, 91, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 10, 2022 at Abercorn Rehabilitation Center.

She was born August 11, 1930 in Sumter, WA. She lost her mom at the age of 7 and her father at 18. She married the love of her life, an army guy, Master Sergeant Ivey C. Simmons at age 17. She was a dutiful soldier wife traveling to the many assigned bases. Her career choice was homemaker; raising and caring for children. When preparing to adopt her first son, a German social worker said it best, “This woman was made for raising children!” Her wrinkled hands were proof of the many dishes washed, diapers changed and piles of clothes washed. She loved the Lord and set that example in her adult life by teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir and sharing how to have faith in Christ. She was a member of Richmond Hill First Baptist Church and a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Temple, Savannah, GA.

Along with her mom and dad, Albert and Roszella Lafond, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ivey C. Simmons.

She is survived by six children, Michael Simmons (Marie), Lindy Stewart (Wyndham), Roszella Blanton, Ivey Simmons, Jr. (Cathy), Penny Busbee (Buddy), and Tami Williams (Paul); several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A family viewing will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Arlington Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

The family thanks Jaque Joseph, staff and residence at Abercorn Rehabilitation Center for the care provided these last years of her life.
