Sylvia A. Dorminey

March 1, 1952 — December 10, 2022

Sylvia Ann Dorminey, 70, of Hinesville passed away December 10, 2022 at her home. She was of the Baptist faith.

Sylvia was born in Douglas, Georgia on March 1, 1952 to the late Henry Stanton Dorminey and the late Elon Barker Dorminey.  She grew up on the family farm in Coffee County.  Her adult life was spent in Hinesville, Georgia.

Sylvia graduated with a B.S. degree in Mathematical Education from Georgia Southern College in 1975.  She later earned a Master’s Degree and Educational Specialist from Georgia Southern.  She began her teaching career in the fall of 1975 at Bradwell Institute in Hinesville, Georgia.  Throughout her career, Sylvia held several positions in the Liberty County School System until her retirement after 35 years of service.  Of her many teaching positions, Sylvia was most proud of serving as the one of the school system’s psychometrist.  Sylvia was very supportive of her students and attend many of their sports and school activities through the years.  Sylvia was also an Adjunct Professor at St. Leo College, Brewton-Parker College, Columbia College, and Armstrong State College where she taught mathematics.

Sylvia was very active in her young adult life, helping coach T-Ball, girls’ softball, and Track and Field for the Liberty County Recreation Department. When not teaching or coaching, Sylvia could be found traveling, camping, or reading books.  After Andrew and Megan were born, they kept Sylvia busy as she never hesitated to travel any distance to support them in their activities, take them on adventures, and care for the dogs and cats they brought to live at her house.

Sylvia is survived by her children of the heart - Andrew D. Pritchett (Danielle) of Fort Meade, Maryland; Megan P. Presley (Zach) of Watkinsville, Georgia; Grandchildren of the heart - Brooke, Lena, Jackson, and William Pritchett; Dawson, Peyton, and Gabie Presley. Sisters - Oveida Burnam of Sylvester, Georgia; Laverne Dorminey of Douglas, Georgia; Gwen Sherwood (Art) of Lenoir, North Carolina. Sister-in-law - Marchetta Johnson of Longwood, Florida and Barbara Hodge of Douglas, Georgia. Lifelong friend - Lynn (David) Pritchett and caregiver - Erica Hamilton. Sylvia is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Sylvia was predeceased by her brothers, Osborne and Winston Dorminey, brother-in-law, Joe Burnam, and nephew, Stan Burnam.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at St. Illa Baptist Church, 5638 GA-158, Douglas, GA 31535. Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, 2023 in Hinesville Cemetery.
