Setsuko Haga Thrift

February 11, 1929 — December 28, 2020

Setsuko Thrift passed away on Monday, December 28, 2020 at the age of 91.

Mrs. Thrift was born on February 11, 1929 in Japan to Kimayp and Akitane Haga of Japan. Growing up in Japan, she was a ballerina and attended boarding school. She was the youngest of the Haga family and was the only one from her family who moved to the United States. In 1955, she found her true love, Mr. Eldred Thrift who was serving in the U.S. Army. She worked hard and earned her United States Citizenship in August 1958.

She retired from the sewing factory in Glennville, GA. Previously, living in Allenhurst, GA for the past eight years, she had been a resident at Coastal Manor Nursing Home and was of Baptist faith. She was an avid painter and enjoyed meeting her Japanese friends faithfully on Fridays for painting, playing cards, and having tea parties.

Mrs. Thrift was preceded in death by her father and mother; four brothers; and four sisters.

She is survived by one son, John Thrift (Connie) of Liberty County; two grandsons, Johnathan Thrift (Shawnea) of Long Beach, CA and Justin Thrift of Gumbranch, GA; one great-grandson, Waylon Thrift of Long Beach, CA; and two great-granddaughters, Ava Thrift of Guyton, GA and Millie Kate Thrift of Gumbranch, GA.

Funeral services will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel with Reverend Gabe Gill officiating. A walk-through visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow in Hillcrest Abbey West in Savannah.

Mrs. Thrift’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Coastal Manor Nursing Home and Liberty Regional Medical Center for the love and care they always gave to her.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Thrift’s family requests donations be made to the Gumbranch Baptist Church Building Fund, 8590 Highway 196 West, Hinesville, GA 31313.
