Lewis Lamar Williamson, Jr., 81, of Sunbury, Georgia, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at his home on May 2, 2025. Lewis was born in Jesup, Georgia, on September 21, 1943. His father Lamar Sr. was from Jacksonville, Georgia, and his mother Mary, a Sasser, was from near Sylvania, Georgia. They raised Lewis in Hinesville, Georgia, along with his two sisters Charlotte and Jackie. Lewis went to high school at Bradwell Institute, class of 1961, where he met and later married his beloved wife of 60 years, Peggy Alice Shave Williamson.

As a teenager, Lewis played football and baseball, valuing the lessons of teamwork and perseverance. He briefly attended college before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1963. His service was both rigorous and transformative, culminating in his acceptance into the elite U.S. Army Special Forces. Trained as a communications specialist and paratrooper, he served in multiple demanding environments, including Panama and the Dominican Republic.

After his military service, Lewis returned home, married his longtime love Peggy, and began a successful civilian career in data processing at Fort Stewart. Starting at the entry level in 1968, he rose steadily to become Director of Information Systems, overseeing hundreds of personnel and a wide range of communications services. He retired in 1999 with 37 years of combined military and civil service.

Lewis's hobbies included flying small aircraft, boating and fishing, shrimping, grilling with friends, reading, spending time with his dogs, Native American history, and metal detecting—a passion that led him to uncover historical Civil War artifacts across Georgia.

Above all, Lewis adored his wife, children, grandchildren and their families, and loved spending time with close friends.

‍Lewis is survived by his wife of 60 years, Peggy of Sunbury GA; son Jace (Wasfi) Williamson of McLean VA; daughter Keri (Jamie) Magness of Sunbury GA; and Keri and Jamie’s two sons Evan and Owen.

‍Lewis is preceded in death by his parents Lamar and Mary; sister, Jackie (Gary) Moore; sister, Charlotte (Bob) Clark; and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
