Kuniko Yohena Varnedoe

May 19, 1936 — July 1, 2021

Kuniko Yohena Varnedoe, 85, passed away peacefully and departed to her Heavenly Home on July 1, 2021.  Kuniko was born in Okinawa on May 19, 1936. She met her life-long soul mate and love of her life, Carl Ivey Varnedoe, Jr., while he was in the U.S. Army and stationed in Okinawa. They were happily married for 64 years. Upon coming to Hinesville, Kuniko joined the Hinesville First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Ollie Darsey Sunday School Class and the Jordye Bacon Circle. She enjoyed flower gardening, crafts, painting, and cooking, but most of all she enjoyed spoiling her husband, grandchildren and children. She was devoted to loving and caring for her grandchildren. She never turned down an opportunity to spend time with them because they were a priority with her and that’s what brought her the most joy. Although Kuniko was small in stature, she was big in kindness and love to all who met and knew her.

Kuniko was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Patricia V. and Edgar M. Edwards, Sr.; granddaughter, Alison Letnaunchyn; and nephew, Edgar M. Edwards, Jr.  She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Carla Standard (Durand), Kame Varnedoe (Jamie Cooke), Marian Letnaunchyn (Bo); four grandchildren, Brandon Standard, Brooke Standard Daubard (Tyler), Elise Letnaunchyn, and Jade Varnedoe Cooke; brother-in-law, David S. Varnedoe (Mary); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude and appreciation to Kuniko’s special caregiver Noah Henderson for his compassion and exceptional care provided to her over several years.

Visitation will be from 2:00 – 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 4, 2021 at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Graveside services will follow in Hinesville Cemetery with Reverend Tony Caldwell officiating.

Pallbearers will be Kuniko’s grandchildren, Brandon Standard, Brooke Standard Daubard, Elise Letnaunchyn, and Jade Varnedoe Cooke, her nephews, Patrick Edwards, Bob Edwards, David Varnedoe, Jr., and Carl R. Varnedoe, and caregiver, Noah Henderson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hinesville First United Methodist Church, 203 North Main Street, Hinesville, GA 31313.
