Kenneth E. Thames, 81, of Midway, Georgia, passed away Saturday April 13, 2024.

He is survived by his daughter Kelly Thames Mauldin and her husband Brent Mauldin; grandsons Sawyer Mauldin and Sam Mauldin of Atlanta, Georgia; nieces Rose Marie Lee and Rebecca Ward of Sumter, South Carolina.

He is preceded in death by his parents Lillian and Shuford “Jack” Thames and his sister Donna Ward of Sumter, South Carolina.

Dr. Thames earned a bachelor’s degree of Engineering from the University of South Carolina and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Defense and retired from the U.S. Department of Energy at the Savannah River Plant. He was a lifelong fisherman and loved living on the water. His engineering background was shown with his ongoing inventions or adjustments to items to make them work even better. He was a real “MacGyver” type. He would use this inventiveness and kindness to help family and neighbors.

He was also a fabulous chef and enjoyed grilling and preparing meals for the family including their fish caught from the dock. His yard was a source of constant joy and frustration. He lived a full life and will be missed tremendously.

A memorial will be held for him for family and friends Memorial Day weekend.
