John Toby Woods, Jr.

John Toby Woods Jr, 93, died at his residence surrounded by his family on January 25, 2024.

Born on Colonels Island, raised in marshes and rivers of the Georgia coast. He was an avid outdoorsman, shell collector, and tall tale teller. John’s family had a long history on St. Catherine’s Island. His family began going to the island in the early 1900’s. His father, John Toby Woods, was superintendent for the island for 32 years. John served as Superintendent for 22 years. He recounts some of these stories in a five-star book that he co-authored, St. Catherine’s Island - The Untold Story of People and Place.

John became a director for the Coastal Electric Cooperative for 40 years. He was president for 22 of those years and was never late or missed a meeting. His attitude was always “it can be done.”

He married Emma Katherine Oetgen, in 1955, and had two children, Holly and John Woods.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Katherine; daughter, Holly Woods Waller; and sisters, Glenise and Clelma.

He is survived by his son, John T. Woods, III, (Sissy); granddaughter, Bonny Katherine Woods-Gunn (Justin); and great-grandson, Toby Lane Gunn.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Midway United Methodist Church, 215 Martin Road, Midway, GA 31320. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service in the church social hall. Burial will immediately follow in Dorchester Cemetery.
