James L. Veres “Jimmy”, 76, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024.

Jimmy was a proud American who served in the Army with dedication and spoke often of the honor to have served in the Vietnam Conflict. During his career in the Army, he also served in Panama and in Germany where he met his wife Hilda and developed a love for Daschunds and cats.

He was a devout Catholic who lived the great commandment to "love the Lord your God and to love your neighbor as yourself." He lived frugally, but was an extremely generous man, with his time, resources and knowledge.

To care for widows in his neighborhood, Jim regularly cut their lawn and detailed their car and even brought in their mail and moved the polycarts.

Jimmy's walks through the neighborhood four times each day were important to him. Often each Sunday after Mass, still in his Sunday suit, he would walk and visit. On his walks, he never met a stranger, only "friends" and he made it a point to speak to every neighbor he saw and pet every cat and dog (even asking the owner how the pet was doing if he didn't see it during his walk).

He provided cold sodas for the mail carrier, as well as the gentlemen with the sanitation department as they came to his house each week in recognition of the valuable, often overlooked, difficult and essential service they provide. Often, he was seen speaking with the recycling staff and regularly telling Brenda, to "let me know if you need any help, young Lady."

After retiring from his service in the Army, he helped the community through various jobs from carving the prime rib and cooking at Malick's Restaurant to cutting lawns and changing the lettering on billboard signs at small businesses.

His kindness and unique sense of humor will be sorely missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hildegard “Hilde” Veres; parents, Louis and Mary Veres; and brother, Louis Joseph Veres, Jr.

Jimmy is survived by his sister, Frances Hildreth (Richard Rinehart) of Creston, OH; and a host of nieces, and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 399 Woodland Drive, Hinesville, GA 31313.
