James DeWayne Phillips

December 10, 1940 — January 9, 2023

James DeWayne Phillips, 82 years of age, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2023 at his home in Fleming surrounded by his family and under the care of GHC Hospice.

DeWayne was born December 10, 1940 in Fleming, Georgia to the late James and Inez Phillips. He was the oldest of six children and was preceded in death by his brother, Marvin M. “Bubba” Phillips; and his sisters, Penny Phillips and Jeanette “Sissy” Driggers.

DeWayne grew up in the “Lane” in Fleming surrounded by a host of loving grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. He was educated in the Liberty County Schools and was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He owned several small businesses and was involved in construction and land development. He was a member of Fleming Baptist Church and was instrumental in the construction of the gymnasium at the Church. 

DeWayne is survived by his wife of thirty-six years, Robin; children, Jerry (Sherrie), Carol (Gene), Kylie and Cole; grandchildren, Jessica, Molly (Alex) and Eliza Grace; great- grandchildren, Ben Luke, Caleb James and Lydia Reagan; brothers, Ellis (Jean) and Ricky, his “other mother”, Margaret Beasley, his former spouse and friend, Jeanette Phillips; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, David and Dana Mullins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel, 308 West Oglethorpe Highway, Hinesville, Georgia with Brenda Crawford officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.  Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Fleming, Georgia. 

Pallbearers will be Jeffery Woods, Dakota Woods, Louie Smith, Jonny Young, Daniel Phillips, Bubba Miles, Emery Phillips and Emery Phillips, Jr.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Jack Quick, Jimmy Smith, Bill Johnson, Micky Johnson, Ricky Williams, and Don Woods.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to GHC Hospice, 141 S. Macon Street, Jesup, Georgia 31545.
