James Emory Smith, 82, of Liberty County, Georgia, passed away on April 19, 2025, at Liberty Regional Hospital following a brief illness. Born on April 3, 1943, in a simple wooden house in Liberty County, Jimmy, as he was affectionately known, lived a vibrant life never straying more than 10 miles from his birthplace.
Jimmy was a man of many talents and trades, embodying the spirit of a true Renaissance soul. Over the years, he worked as a movie projectionist, banker, disc jockey, insurance salesman, truck driver, bar owner, liquor store owner, politician, professional fisherman, seafood retailer, and carpenter. His knack for connection was so legendary that he famously convinced the telephone company to list him as "Jimmy Smith, The Original One" in the phone book at no extra charge.Music was jimmy's greatest passion. Though he never played an instrument, he fostered deep friendships with musicians and poured his heart into hosting and producing live music events. Many of these gatherings took place at his grandmother's home, known as The Green House, where he applied his carpentry skills constructing stages and facilities for performers and attendees, creating cherished gathering spaces.
Jimmy's warmth and openness made him a friend to all, with a circle of companions too vast to number. His life, however, was marked by profound loss when his young wife, Sandy, died suddenly, leaving behind their two-month-old son, James Jr. This tragedy forever shaped Jimmy, yet he carried on with resilience and an unwavering love for those around him.
He was preceded in death by parents Homer Smith, Irene Bell Smith and brother Homer L. Smith.
He is survived by his loving and devoted partner Leslie Bowling, children Jamey Smith (Debbie), Heather Scott (Damien), grandsons James "Tripp" Smith, Christian Scott (Jordan), granddaughters Emmaline Scott, Mary Elizabeth Scott, great granddaughter Lucy Scott, sister June Smith Hendry and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Countless friends will forever remember his generosity, humor, and boundless spirit. A graveside service will be held at Hinesville Cemetery at 11am May 3ª followed by a remembrance celebration May 4 at Sunbury Crab Company 2-5pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local music education charity in Jimmy's honor.
Jimmy Smith's legacy is one of music, friendship, and a life lived fully in the place he called home.
