George Frederick Matteson

September 26, 1929 — January 19, 2021

George Frederick Matteson, 91, of Hinesville, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at his home.

George was born on September 26, 1929 to Clyde and Margaret Matteson of New Berlin, New York. He was one of eight children and grew up on a Dairy Farm.

He enlisted in the Army in August of 1948 and attended basic training at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky. He spent the majority of his 24 years of service in airborne units. George served with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team in the Korean War and with the 101st Airborne Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade during two tours in Vietnam. George was a U.S. Army Master Parachutist and Gliderman. After his military service, George worked for the Fort Stewart Post Engineers and the Defense Commissary Agency before retiring once again in 1993.

George enjoyed traveling and meeting people. If your paths crossed during his travels, he was sure to get your contact information and check in on you when you least expected it. He was a huge NASCAR fan and rooted for his driver Kyle Busch. On race day, you could catch him shouting at the TV "Go Kyle-Get Em!" Each year he hosted a Christmas Party at his home and invited his closest friends. He was loved by many throughout the community and will be missed dearly.

George was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and his loving wife of 37 years, Jessie Weaver Matteson.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.
