Charles Leonard Capps, 83, passed away at his home on Ashmore Road in Hinesville, GA on Tuesday, October 31, 2023.

He was born on August 3, 1940 in Aynor, SC to the late John and Martha Capps. He was married to the late Nancy Lou Capps for 46 years. 

Charles was a member of Vietnam Veterans of America, the Savannah Mustang Club, and Liberty Chapter #789. He was in the U.S. Army for 22 years and was a highly decorated Vietnam War Veteran, having served from 1961 – 1983. He did two tours in Vietnam, 1967 – 1968 and 1969 – 1970, and Korea.  He received two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, and multiple other achievement medals. Charles was stationed in multiple states and also overseas in Germany. He loved serving his country. In 1983, he retired from the U.S. Army at Ft. Stewart Army Base in Hinesville, GA. After retiring from the Army, he worked as a rural carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for several years in Hinesville. 

Charles was a faithful member of Crossroads Holy Church of God. His biggest hobbies were collecting cars, spinning wheels, and going to car shows. He also enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family and friends, and coin collecting. He loved spending time with and spoiling his dog, Sandy, who he rescued 2 years ago. He loved God, his family, and his country.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry Capps, James Capps, and Coleman Capps; and one sister, Lucile Skipper. 

Charles is survived by five children, Charles L. Capps, Jr. (Peggy) of Eutawville, SC, Johnny L. Capps (Mary) of Charleston, SC, Charles Brian Capps of Hinesville, GA, Cynthia D. Mock (David) of Varnville, SC, and Evan L. Capps of Midway, GA; one step-daughter, Cathy Larkin of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Kyle Larkin (Michelle) of Arizona, John Capps, II (Brandi) of Varnville, SC; Christopher C. Altman (Elizabeth) of Varnville, SC; Cody A. Altman (Cheyenne) of Varnville, SC, Joe Legare (Angel) of Evans, GA, Brandi N. Greer (Devin) of Hampton, SC, Amber L. Shaw of Walterboro, SC, and three other granddaughters; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Herman Capps (late Jackie) of Charleston, SC; Holly Kennedy of Ludowici, GA, whom Charles considered to be his bonus daughter; and multiple nieces and nephews. 

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at Carter Funeral Home. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, GA.
