Carl Ivey Varnedoe, Jr.

November 3, 1931 — March 17, 2021

Carl Ivey Varnedoe, Jr., 89, went to be with his Heavenly Father on March 17, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family who cared for him during his long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Carl was born in Hinesville, Georgia on November 3, 1931 to the late Carl Ivey Varnedoe, Sr. and Kathleen Stafford Varnedoe.  He served several years in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Okinawa. While in Okinawa he met the love of his life, Kuniko Yohena. They were happily married for 64 years. Upon leaving the military, Carl joined the Fort Stewart Fire Department where he had a successful career and retired as Fire Chief in 1983.

Carl was a lifelong member of the Hinesville First United Methodist Church and served as a trustee and as treasurer of the A.G. Overman Men’s Bible Class for over forty years.  He enjoyed gardening, quail hunting, fishing, and carpentry, but his favorite activity was spending time with his family.  His most cherished moments were spent caring for his grandchildren and influencing them through his generosity, kindness, faithfulness to God, and love of his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia V. and Edgar M. Edwards, Sr.; granddaughter, Alison Letnaunchyn; and nephew, Edgar M. Edwards, Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Kuniko; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carla Standard (Durand), Kame Varnedoe (Jamie Cooke), and Marian Letnaunchyn (Bo); four grandchildren, Brandon Standard, Brooke Standard Daubard (Tyler), Elise Letnaunchyn, and Jade Varnedoe Cooke; brother, David S. Varnedoe (Mary); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude and appreciation to Carl’s special caregiver Noah Henderson for his attentive and exceptional care, and also to the staff of Liberty Regional Medical Center and Georgia Hospice for their care and compassion.

A walk-through visitation will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2021 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. in Hinesville Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Carl’s grandchildren, Brandon Standard, Brooke Standard Daubard, Elise Letnaunchyn, and Jade Varnedoe Cooke; and his nephews, Pat Edwards, Bob Edwards, David Varnedoe, Jr., and Carl R. Varnedoe.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Noah Henderson and the A.G. Overman Bible Class.
