Alma Parker Haggerty

June 1, 1928 — July 29, 2017

Alma Parker Haggerty, surrounded by loving family, went peacefully to her eternal home on July 29, 2017.  Alma was born on June 1, 1928, in Liberty County, GA, to George Henry Parker and Viola Frances McDonald Parker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas Leo Haggerty; sister, Thelma George; brothers, Tommy Parker, Homer Parker, Dent Parker, and Simon Parker; son-in-law, Dave Bjork; and wonderful friend, Jean McGinn.

Alma cherished the pleasures of life’s simple genuine offerings such as sitting in a beach chair at the ocean’s edge and catching whiting, watching a good wrestling match on TV, a Thanksgiving meal with all the family, and putting in a good day’s work.  Her jobs at McLarry’s, Leroy’s, The New and Not, etc., all provided means to visit the good people of the community and afforded her the ability to get every family member something for Christmas.  She was always a giver.

Alma held family close to her heart and was a generous and kind provider who acted justly, loved mercy and walked humbly with God.

Her courage, strength, and love was an inspiration to her children, Judy Anderson (Joe), Linda Bjork, Sheila Fraser (Layton), and Mike Haggerty, and special family friend, Deloris Dasher-Kingsley.  She will also be missed (“…Did you wash those hands?”) by 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a visitation from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel.  Funeral Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church Hinesville at 11am, Wednesday, August 2, 2017, with Reverend Roland Banks and Reverend Dale Thornton officiating.   Burial will follow at Pigot Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to First Presbyterian Church, 320 East Memorial Drive, Hinesville, GA  31313.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Coastal Manor Nursing Home and Georgia Hospice.

Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.carteroglethorpe.com.
