Thomas R. Futch

January 23, 1940 — October 13, 2017


SFC Thomas R. Futch, Sr. “Big Daddy” (United States Army, retired), passed away Friday, October 13, 2017, at Memorial University Medical Center surrounded by his family.

A native of New Smyrna, FL, he lived in Hinesville for the past 42 years.  He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and a Mason.   He was retired from the Army after 23 years of service, including two tours of duty in Vietnam and one in Korea.  He later retired from civil service at Fort Stewart.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and mud bogging.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas R. Futch, Jr., and a daughter, Karola Kennedy.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margot Futch; children, Margie Gauthier of Colorado, Abi Schlenker of Hinesville, Nathan Lawler (Susanne) of Hinesville, Alma Riedel (Bill) of Hinesville, and Mary Winkles (John) of Fleming; 17 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and several other family members.


Visitation will be 10-11 am, Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 11 am in the chapel.  Burial with Full Military Honors will be at Oglethorpe Memorial Park.
