Henry G. Norby (“299”), 77, passed away at Landmark Hospital in Savannah, Wednesday, December 26, 2018, after a short illness.  His wife was by his side.

Born in Walthourville, he lived in Midway for most of his life.  He was a lifelong construction worker and worked for ESG Operations (City of Hinesville Public Works) for over 15 years where he was affectionately known as “299” and for his sense of humor.  He went to work early everyday to be sure he had time to pick on everybody.  He worked until the day before he was hospitalized.  Henry was also an accomplished mechanic, being honored with Mechanic of the Year several years at Oglethorpe Speedway where he was the mechanic for his son Donald’s racing team.  He loved fishing with his son Robert, gardening, racing and his grandchildren.  He was the tough guy who all the kids and grandkids in the family looked up to.  He attended Midway United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Myrtie Norby, brothers, Thomas and James Norby, and sister, Ellen Powell.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jackie Norby, and sons, Robert Norby (Angie) and Donald Norby, of Midway; grandchildren, T.J. Norby, Kerstin Norby, Kasey Norby, and Kyndall Curl; brothers, Fred Norby, Hiram Norby (Anne), Dewitt Norby (Carla), and Billy Norby (Lynda); sister-in-law, Marie Norby; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Friday, December 28, 2018, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel.  Funeral services will begin at 11 am, Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel.  Burial will follow in Walthourville Presbyterian Church Cemetery.  Please come dressed as you are most comfortable, as you would if you were coming to visit or for Henry and Jackie’s New Year’s cookout.

Pallbearers will be Zachary Norby, Kyndall Curl, Justin Clemmer, Jeremy Clemmer, Dylan Boyles, and Andrew Boyles.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Midway United Methodist Church, 215 Martin Road, Midway, GA; the Epilepsy Foundation (www.epilepsy.com), 8301 Professional Place W #230, Landover, MD 20785; or the charity of the giver’s choice.
