Major Dykes, Jr.

August 17, 1934 — February 21, 2018

Major Dykes, Jr., age 83, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.  He was a resident of The Suites at Station Exchange in Richmond Hill, GA.  He was born to Annie Tabb and Major A. Dykes in Toombs County, GA on August 17, 1934.  He lived in Hinesville most of his life. Major is survived by his children, Joey Dykes (Vicky), Kenny Dykes (Marcia), Debbie Bacon, Patty Maxwell (Phil), Cecilia Bird, and Charity Harchar (Brian).  Step-children, Brandi Dunham (Joseph), Angela Spaulding, and Kimberly Richardson (Lee).  He is also survived by his sisters, Corene Dugger, Ditha Dykes Troha, Janelle Dykes Wilkes (Barry), and Sue Dykes Miller.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Lenard Jerome Dykes (July 11, 2011), and also preceded in death by two half-brothers, and three half-sisters.  Major is survived by 15 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 step-great-grandchild.  He also leaves behind a special lady friend, Sherra Chassereau. Major was a retired Baptist minister who loved to preach God’s word, and had a passion for leading others to the Lord.  His other interest’s were fishing, coon hunting, reading, and writing.  He was an avid fisherman, and hosted numerous fish fries for family and friends during his many years of fishing. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Pallbearers for “Big Daddy” will be six of his grandsons. The funeral service will be held at Fleming Baptist Church at 2:30 on Sunday afternoon, February 25, 2018.  Major’s son-in-law, Reverend Phil Maxwell will be officiating. Viewing will be one hour before the service and burial will follow at Hinesville Cemetery. Carter Funeral Home Bryan Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
